Looking At Employees Of Big Brothers Big Sisters Public Agency Social Work Essay Essays Looking At Employees Of Big Brothers Big Sisters Public Agency Social Work Essay Essay Looking At Employees Of Big Brothers Big Sisters Public Agency Social Work Essay Essay their grade, and so on. Another of import standard is the professional experience, preferred in the field of instruction, including establishments and organisations, where an applier has been working and how long the applier has been working at that place, any wagess and other Markss of professional development. In add-on, the bureau pays a batch of attending to psychological feature of appliers carry oning psychological trials to uncover their basic dispositions and traits of character suitable for work in the bureau. Literature Review The bureau pays a batch of attending to the quality of services and effectual direction of the bureau to guarantee the high quality of mentoring being provided by professionals working at the bureau to the young person. At the same clip, the quality direction begins with the enlisting of the forces and proviso of mentoring services to kids in different states of the universe. In such a state of affairs, human resource direction in Big Brothers Big Sisters becomes important for the overall success of the organisational public presentation. On analysing the development of the Big Brothers Big Sisters bureau, many specializers ( Schein, 1999 ) point out that the bureau was traditionally oriented on the development of single attack to kids enrolled in plans of the bureau. As a consequence, the bureau had to choose the forces carefully to be able to use the best specializers, who can execute their occupation absolutely and to happen an single attack to each kid. At the same clip, the usage of the single attack to each kid enrolled in the bureau s plans implies that professionals working in the bureau can make their occupation efficaciously and, what is more of import, they can analyze the personality of kids and utilize effectual methods in mentoring them ( Furano, 1993 ) . Basically, this means that professionals working at Big Brothers Big Sisters should hold an in-depth cognition in the field of psychological science. In this respect, Big Brothers Big Sisters is interested in the employment of psychologists and professi onals with the educational background ( Clarke, 2000 ) . What is meant here is the fact that the mark employees and voluntaries the bureau is interested in are professional pedagogues and psychologists. As the affair of fact Big Brothers Big Sisters efforts to spread out its activities and supply kids with mentoring services utilizing pedagogues and psychologists working at the bureau. In this respect, it is peculiarly notable to advert the fact that Big Brothers Big Sisters employs professionals to make the voluntary occupation ( Hussey and Ong, 2000 ) . The latter is peculiarly of import, taking into consideration the fact that Big Brothers Big Sisters is non-profit bureau. Therefore, the bureau can non afford undertaking professional pedagogues and psychologists en masse to mentor kids. In this regard, specializers ( Hart, 2004 ) point out that Big Brothers Big Sisters involves voluntaries to supply kids with mentoring services. At this point, it is deserving adverting the fact that pedagogues and psychologists working at Big Brothers Big Sisters do parttime occupations and frequently they combine their work at a school, college or university with their voluntary occupation at th e bureau. As a consequence, pedagogues working at Big Brothers Big Sisters have an extended experience and they are eager to work with kids to assist them. At the same clip, Big Brothers Big Sisters employs contracted employees but these employees are employed for the direction of the bureau chiefly ( Bovee and Thill, 2005 ) . Obviously, the effectual direction is important for the positive organisational public presentation and endurance of the non-profit bureau because Big Brothers Big Sisters can non afford transporting on its mentoring service, if the bureau is managed ill and is running out of money. On the other manus, the managerial staff of the company is non wholly contracted ( Peters, 2007 ) . In other words, there are both contracted and non-contracted directors working at the bureau. The employment of non-contracted employees and directors is highly of import for the bureau because these employees and directors bring in enthusiasm in the work of the bureau. These employees and directors are concerned with their work and they do non see fiscal wagess and material benefits as the ultimate end of their work. Alternatively, they are concerned with the non-material values and benefits they can give to kids enrolled in the bureau s plans. Furthermore, the bureau conducts the scheme of the employment of contract employees for preparation ( Notorantonio, 2006 ) . The preparation of the forces is really of import for the bureau and comprises an built-in portion of the organisational civilization and scheme of Big Brothers Big Sisters. The development of the bureau is accelerated due to the preparation of employees working at Big Brothers Big Sisters. In this regard, it is deserving adverting the fact that Big Brothers Big Sisters provide professionals working at the bureau to better their making through preparation. In such a manner, the voluntary occupation in the bureau allows professionals working at Big Brothers Big Sisters to develop their professional accomplishments and abilities and to increase their professional degree. From the really get downing it would be indispensable to observe that human resources are in the centre of the probe of BBBS public bureau. It is indispensable to observe that Big Brothers and Big Sisters is non-profit-making organisation that is why it has a twine trade with the volunteering and realisations of the plans it provides got to match to modern-day U.S statute law. It is a good known fact that the company plays in the service oriented industry and the corporate values of the non-profit-making organisation drama rather a important function in matching to the Equal Employment Opportunity policies provided within the Civil Rights Act in 1964 covering with the protectionism the Equal Employment Opportunity: forbid the prejudiced patterns in hiring, dispatching, publicity, layoff, and wage of workersaˆÂ ¦these policies extend to the preparation, choice, or enlisting of workers ( United States Commission on Human Rights, 1969 ) . It will non be surprising that the compan y, runing on the high quality degree and playing a noticeable function in public service and working with kids, keeps to the equality policy in all the beginnings covering with human resource direction and hiring, particularly the facet of equal payment. As every successful public bureau that wishes to match to the modern-day development of HR policies and supply successful plans Big Brothers and Big Sisters public bureau supports medical insurance and benefits system for its workers, industry compensation and net income sharing benefits for those most unmarked group in the industry the client service and ramp workers. Another important jurisprudence that regulates retirement plans and protects the employees is Employee Retirement Income Security Act ( ERISA ) . It should be noted that the company does non distribute any information about the retirement plans. It happens because BBBS employs chiefly immature people, which would be easier to acquire along with the kids, the nucleus mark group of this public bureau. The followers will exemplify what is called volunteering for BBBS: You have the chance to assist determine a kid s hereafter for the better by authorising them to accomplish. And the best portion is, it is really a batch of merriment and you can portion the sorts of activities you like to make with your small. You can play athleticss together, travel on a hiking, read books, eat a pizza with excess anchovies or merely give some advice and inspiration. Whatever it is you enjoy, odds are you ll bask them even more with your Small and you ll be doing a life-changing impact ( BBBS, 2010 ) . It will non be a secret that utilizing voluntary s aid could be related for the regular employees have as so called provisional period in order to understand what is the nucleus purpose of their work and does it suit for those who want to maintain on working in the industry of public service and societal working. Large Brother and Big Sisters is considered to be a public bureau that employs a batch of people and it would be obvious to observe that such service oriented company should correlate it recruitment policies with the Equal Pay Act, which provided a important influence on the company s HR and protects work forces and adult females who perform well equal work in the same constitution from sex-based pay favoritism ( Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, 2009 ) . Large Brothers and Big Sisters public bureau seeks for the energetic people who eager to work in societal domain and understanding the troubles connected with societal working, particularly with such a debatable inquiry as turning up healthy new coevalss. The company provides a figure of benefits for the workers and their households, pulling people who are intended to recognize themselves within the corporation. Harmonizing to the independent probes BBBS Public Agency is a just public bureau, which HR construction and hiring does non really match to the modern-day American norms and statute law. Hence the information covering with the benefits and compensation could barely be observed within the organisation. It should be noted that the company employs a figure of people lawfully and among the benefits it provides, despite medical insurance is changeless instruction and sharing experience between the different sections located all over the state. It should be noted that BBBS is a immense bureau and so ill developed system of benefits and compensation could barely add to its popularity as a public bureau. Taking attention about the new coevalss and the hereafter of the state is truly deserving of praising. But such an old societal establishment should be more careful and attentive to their work demands and demands for the changeless growing It would be indispensable to observe that developing good benefits and compensation system for the employers and edifice HR policies on the wages and benefit system the company would do the BBBS Public Agency attractive for extremely qualified and perspective workers and specializers, who are eager to have competitory rewards and extra figure of fillips for them and their households. It goes without stating that such a system needs important betterment. The major end of the bureau is to mentor kids and assist them to happen their ain manner in their professional calling. In such a context, Big Brothers Big Sisters bureau pays a peculiar attending to the preparation and professional development of its employees and voluntaries to guarantee the high quality of their work and positive organisational public presentation to maximise the effectivity of the work of the bureau and minimise costs spent by the bureau on the care of its installations and human resources. First of wholly, it is of import to put accent on the fact that Big Brothers Big Sisters bureau focuses on the usage of attacks which allow the bureau to develop and develop employees and voluntaries within the bureau ( Furano, 1993 ) . The company uses portion cognition plan, which involves preparation classs for employees working within the bureau. The preparation plan includes the organisation of developing squads headed by a manager, who conducts the preparation. Team members portion their cognition and experience they have acquired in the class of their work. The manager works as a usher to squad members. As it was written before the manager besides play a important function in educational plans for the employees. It goes without stating that is really responsible and of import procedure in the bureau. In this regard, the cognition sharing direction is an highly effectual scheme used by the bureau in relation to its employees and voluntaries. The cognition sharing direction implies the organisation of preparation classs and plans within the bureau affecting employees working in the bureau merely. In fact, this means that employees working in the bureau portion their professional cognition and experience with each other in the class of their preparation plans. As a regulation, more experient employees train new comers, whereas directors can develop voluntaries and employees to execute their occupations decently ( Peters, 2007 ) . As the bureau has started to distribute its operations internationally, professionals working in the US trained new employees and voluntaries recruited in other states. As a consequence, the bureau did non affect professionals and trainers from other companies and, therefore, saved costs on preparation and professional development of its employees. Another effectual attack to preparation and professional development of employees used by Big Brothers Big Sisters bureau is the deputation. The deputation means that employees change their places and execute maps and responsibilities of each other, replacing each other ( Beiswinger, 1985 ) . In such a manner, employees learn to execute the occupation of other employees. They get new experience and spread out their professional cognition, develop new accomplishments and abilities ( Greif, 1997 ) . In add-on, they become more responsible and able to understand other employees better because they perform their maps and cognize troubles of their work ( Hussey and Ong, 2000 ) . In such a manner, the deputation contributes non merely to the professional development and preparation of employees but besides to the betterment of interpersonal relationships within the organisation and formation of the positive organisational civilization. The appraisal of the effectivity of the preparation plan is grounded on the employment of pupils mentored by BBBS professionals. At the same clip, the work of each professional is assessed on the footing of his or her appraisal by his or her co-workers, who rate the work of the mark employee from one to ten points severally to his or her success and effectivity. It is of import to reason that BBBS is an effectual organisation that helps kids and immature people to happen their manner in their professional and personal life. Through instruction, BBBS helps the younger coevals to get down a successful and socially incorporate life. Today, the bureau operates internationally that increases the function and effectivity of BBBS as a non-profit organisation. Specialists ( Keener, 1999 ) point out that Big Brothers Big Sisters bureau stresses the importance of the employment of well-qualified professionals to maximise the effectivity of the organisational public presentation and to guarantee the high quality of mentoring services being delivered to kids enrolled in the bureau s services. In this respect, the bureau efforts to keep the high professional degree of its employees and promote their voluntary occupation. On the other manus, the bureau efforts to steer and mentor kids enrolled in its plans throughout their instruction and professional dev elopment to the point, when kids can get down their professional calling. Therefore, taking into history all above mentioned, it is of import to put accent on the fact that Big Brothers Big Sisters bureau uses the cognition sharing direction and deputation as the major attacks to preparation and professional development of its employees and voluntaries. Both attacks are effectual and contribute to the professional development of employees and betterment of the organisational civilization. Decision. Recommendations for Further Improvement of HRM Strategies at BBBS. After careful alteration of the Big Brother and Big Sisters HR schemes, functionality and undertaking public presentation at that place have been drawn out a series of recommendations that will assist to better the HR organisation in the public bureau. It would be indispensable to get down with drawbacks. The most important disadvantage noticed within the human resource scheme of BBBS is societal exposure of the workers. This non-profit-making organisation, despite its high degree organisation and purpose to pull extremely qualified professionals does non supply satisfactory system for the employees and voluntaries, who are working on it. This is the first thing needed betterment. Human resources schemes in public bureaus should include societal protection and compensation and benefit system for employees. This would do the work in this bureau more attractive and provide dependable dealingss between employees and employers. This drawback should be improved every bit far as possible, as it was mentioned before the bureau is seeking for extremely qualified professionals to take the squads and supply undertaking public presentation preparations for the staff. Unfortunately information about the staff turnover is non available for the bureau. But it would of import to observe that development of effectual compensation and benefits plan would significantly diminish material turnover within the bureau and do the professional be more interested in working at BBBS. Another strategic drawback that is among the most noticeable is age favoritism. In their hiring schemes Big Brothers Big Sisters public bureau East chiefly on the young person as the mark group for the employment ( it chiefly deals with the voluntaries and the aims and plans the bureau has ) . But it wo nt be a secret that modern-day preparation plans developed by the public bureaus could easy accommodate to those who are in their after 40-s. The aim of the bureau could be interpreted and include non merely youth in the employment plans of the bureau but people which are elder than 40-s. That would assist to develop effectual preparation plans for voluntaries and profession and concentrate on the better organisation of the undertaking public presentation. The cognition and experience of such employees would give bureau the new breath. This information is particularly acute in the present twenty-four hours deficiency of professionals to take the squads and manage and develop preparati on plans for the voluntaries. It goes without stating that solution of these nucleus jobs would better current state of affairs with the firing HR countries in BBBS

Hospitality management - Essay Example Though I had passion in this field, I had to read and understand many facts about this academic discipline. From void literature to noteworthy complex materials, I embarked on a journey of seeking knowledge. I must admit that although I got varied interpretations, the messages were clear and interesting. Additionally, I must admit that I have been a thinker right through my course as a student of hospitality management. Nonetheless, I must say that through continuous class attendance and personal studies, my skills continue to increase tremendously. As compared to the past, I now know much more and this is something that inspires me most. My critical analysis skills have increased greatly, and undoubtedly, in everything I learn or do, I always ask myself â€Å"why† on very many instances. Although being only a first year student, I have learnt on how to challenge myself by digging deep into manuscripts where I will probably find the necessary details that will not only satisfy me, but also help me in my academic journey. Most importantly, I believe that through education and hard work, one can become successful in life (Annie, Howard & Mildred, 1996, p. 2). To start with, academic skills are a compilation of learning strategies, learning tendencies, and time supervision contrivances, which will enable a student to achieve his or her expectations in school or at college. Critical Thinking envi 423 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Critical Thinking envi 423 - Essay Example The US economy and particularly the value of dollar is very much dependent on the oil of the Middle East and this is the reason; she gives priority to Saudi Arabia and Israel in her foreign policy. All the readings provided during this course were marvelous and has the greatest intellect value. Moreover, the course contributed to enhance my world view and helped me to develop the analytical skill to understand the events in details. However, the following three issues contributed significantly to my learning in this course: The present age is called the ‘era of information’. Media that includes television channels, radio, newspapers, magazines, journals and World Wide Web is busy in generating knowledge for viewers, audiences and readers. The media has its own shortcomings and hence it moulds the information as it suits itself or its country. Every piece of reading or broadcast has some sort of information but this cannot be declared authentic or we can call it ‘disinformation’. Resultantly, the world view based on this ‘disinformation’ would definitely lead astray. Junline Assange coined the term ‘scientific journalism’ to deal with this menace but still this is a utopia. prolific speeches by professional orators, logical argumentations and misuse of even true information have become the hall mark of the present day media. Moreover, entertainment industry has become the largest industry of the world and even education is also being imparted through t he modern techniques of entertainment which led to the creation of new term of ‘infotainment’. All this entertainment stuff and dazzling media satisfies the sensory needs of human being and does not invoke contemplation. This fuss will end up with the emergence of psychological problems, and ideological width among human beings. There is a dire need to rein the media as it is taking undue benefit of its liberty under the tag of media freedom. Another issue that contributed

It is essential to understand to whom we are talking their position. We also have to respect the rules and culture while communicating to each other. Rhetorical theory: this theory targets not only the receiving message but also the respond produced. The information and Communication technologies are changing in day to day life style. They are improving the way a message delivers to a audience. The ways of adverting are using website, other company website banners, classified, multimedia presentation, flyers and posters. The type’s advertisements are Product advertisement which is selling a single product such as mobile phones, electronic goods. Product advertisement only targets a limited people who will be using that product or services. Business advertisement is to make the company brand familiar to the audience. For example the brands most commonly known by the people are Nike, Timberland, Apple products. Service advertisement suggest the advertises service. Examples of service advertise are Government, Tourism and banking. As the latest technologies are gradually getting demand, advertising in a website will be idle for targeting the customers. Most of the users browse and prefer to shop online. In order to sell produ cts online it is essential to details every specification of the product so that it will be easy for the clients to understand how the product or services will work before they purchase. Main important information that should be displayed if using website for advertisement is the company name, product name and contact information. The most popular online shopping website are ebay and amazon which allow many suppliers to sell product online and also allows the clients to review the services they get while shopping online and which may help the users who visit the product to understand a general knowledge on how the services are given to the customers. The important advantage or using website to advertise product online are the product can be advertised in the same country or make it visible for other countries a s well. Task 02 The Role and Importance of Advertising Advertising is part of Marketing. In order to stimulate customer response always the advertisement is a good opportunity for the company to promote. The more people see the product/service, the more they feel like buying it. So many companies rely on advertising these days to boost sales of their products or services, to build a connection with their audience and to create competition with their rival firms There are different types to gain customer’s awareness like advertising, and promotion, Also there are different places that advertisements can be positioned, using the metro, trams, buses, restaurants and so on The advertising objectives should support main company’s goal and should be discussed with company-client in order to avoid misunderstanding. The advertising roles are based on company’s marketing strategy, like; * Increase sales * Increase brand awareness * Supporting other market efforts Advertising gives companies and businesses the opportunity to build up a brand and an identity. A recent example of this having great success is with the Apple brand. The distinct adverts in both TV andprintform are instantly identifiable as the companys own and give it an identity as a clean, modern and reputable brand. Advertisements need to relate to current trends and sell both a product individually as well as the company as a whole. If an advertisement succeeds at both it can help draw an audience to the product or service and build a relationship between the consumer and company. Establishing this connection should lead to a boost in sales for the business. One of the best ways to advertise is by word of mouth, also known as referral marketing or referral advertising. When other people hear good things about your business or they have a positive experience shopping with your business, they become walking billboards for your business without you having to spend additional money on ads to create it. Advertising locally through newspapers and fliers as well as billboards can be an effective source of it when your business is up-and-coming, but expanding your advertising sources becomes important as you grow. You can extend your advertising approach out to television commercials as well as radio in order to reach wider audiences, but the revenue from your business should be able to pay for it costs for these methods to bring you the value you are looking for. Creating an assortment of advertising and marketing techniques will help you to reach many different customer bases. Identifying a target market to advertise your business to is also very valuable, because a target market of customers will be more interested in your business than trying to appeal to masses of people with varying interests. Making sure that enough people know that you exist who are naturally interested in your product as a target is a great way to bring in customers and increase the profit of your business. Creating an impulse in potential customers to purchase your product is very important when it comes to advertising. It can be easy to create it that puts your customer in a mindset not to purchase your product, either by unintentionally avoiding the sale of your product by focusing on information or topics that draw attention away from your product. Be sure to study the needs of your target market to get the best results. In modern times the importance of advertising your business is no different. Without an audience for your product or service, you will not attract enough customers and will not make enough sales to keep your business doors open. great gatsby :: essays research papers

The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, contains many literary devices. One of such devices is characterization, the author’s method of describing characters. In this novel, the author creates many of the characters to be superficial. Through their actions, comments, and descriptions, Fitzgerald gives the reader an idea of the characters. One such character proves to be Daisy. Although she had fallen in love with Gatsby when she first met him, when he was at war she quickly wanted something to shape her life. Because of the wealth and lifestyle involved, she chose Tom Buchanan as her husband. Later, we see that Daisy still loves Gatsby, and cheats on Tom because of this. This act shows that she is disloyal and shallow. Daisy believes that she can go on with life however she wants and not have to worry about those she affects. She was the driver of the car and killed Myrtle, yet she let Gatsby die because of his love for her. Daisy abused Gatsby’s emotions, and then left the area with Tom to get away from the destruction they caused. These are ways in which Daisy proved to be a superficial character. Another character who displays such qualities is Daisy’s husband, Tom. Tom is even more dishonest than Daisy, a notion that begins taking shape with the discovery of Tom’s "girl" in the city. Tom proves to be a man of little morals. Although he confronts Daisy about morals in her relationship with Gatsby, Tom has his own woman on the side. Also, he lets this fact be known by others as though it does not bother him, an exposing of his nature. Later, after Myrtle is killed in the accident, Tom shows sadness, but not remorse. Tom then instructs George to murder Gatsby, an act that comes more from a heart seeking revenge for Daisy than for Myrtle.

Beyond Rivalry Essay

During childhood, sisters and brothers are a major part of each other’s lives, for better or for worse. As adults they may drift apart as they become involved in their own careers, marriages and families. But in later life, with retirement, an empty nest, and parents and sometimes spouses gone, brothers and sisters often turn back to each other for a special affinity and link to the past. â€Å"In the stressful, fast- paced world we live in, the sibling relationship becomes for many the only intimate connection that seems to last,† says psychologist Michael Kahn of the University of Hartford. Friends and neighbors may move away, former coworkers are forgotten, marriages break up, but no matter what, our sisters and brothers remain our sisters and brothers. This late- life bond may be especially important to the â€Å"Baby Boom† generation now in adulthood, who average about two or three sibling apiece. High divorce rates and the decision by many couples to have only one or no children will force members of this generation to look to their brothers and sisters for support in old age. And, as psychologist Deborah Gold of the Duke Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development points out, â€Å"Since people are living longer and are healthier longer, they will be more capable of giving help. † Critical events can bring siblings together or deepen an existing rift, according to a study by psychologists Helgola Ross and Joel Milgram of the University of Cincinnati. Parental sickness or death is a prime example. Ross and Milgram found that siblings immersed in rivalry and conflict were even more torn apart by the death or sickness of a parent. Those siblings who had been close since childhood became closer. In a study of older people with sisters and brothers, Gold found that about 20 percent said they were either hostile or indifferent toward their siblings. Reasons for the rifts ranged from inheritance disputes to animosity between spouses. But many of those who had poor relationship felt guilt and remorse. A man who hadn’t spoken with his sister in 20 years described their estrangement as a â€Å"festering sore. Although most people in Ross and Milgram’s study admitted to some lingering rivalry, it was rarely strong enough to end the relationship. Only 4 out of the 55 people they interviewed had completely broken with their siblings and only 1 of the 4 felt comfortable with the break, leaving the researchers to ask, â€Å"Is it psychologically impossible to disassociate oneself from one’s siblings in the way one can forget old friends or even former mates? † As brothers and sisters advance into old age, â€Å"closeness increases and rivalry diminishes,† explains Victor Cicirelli, a psychologist at Purdue University. Most of the elderly people he interviewed said they had supportive and friendly dealings and got along well or very well with their brothers and sisters. Only 4 percent got along poorly. Gold found that as people age they often become more involved with and interested in their siblings. Fifty- three percent of those she interviewed said that contact with their sisters and brothers increased in late adulthood. With family and career obligations reduced, many said they had more time for each other. Others said that they felt it was â€Å"time to heal wounds. A man who had recently reconciled with his brother told Gold, â€Å"There’s something that lets older people put aside the bad deeds of the past and focus a little on what we need now†¦especially when it’s brothers and sisters. † Another reason for increased contact was anxiety about a sister’s or brother’s declining health. Many would call more often to â€Å"check in† and see how the other was doing. Men especially reported feeling increased responsibility for a sibling; women were more likely to cite emotional motivation such as feelings of empathy and security. Siblings also assume special importance as other sources of contact and support dwindle. Each of us moves through life with a â€Å"convoy† of people who supply comfort and nurturance, says psychologist Toni C. Antonucci of the University of Michigan. As we age, the size of the convoy gradually declines because of death, sickness or moving. â€Å"Brothers and sisters who may not have been important convoy members earlier in life can become so in old age,† Gold says. And they do more than fill in gaps. Many people told Gold that the loneliness they felt could not be satisfied by just anyone. They wanted a specific type of relationship, one that only someone who had shared their past could provide. This far- reaching link to the past is a powerful bond between siblings in later life. â€Å"There’s a review process we all go through in old age to resolve whether we are pleased with our lives,† Gold explains. â€Å"A sibling can help retrieve a memory and validate our experiences. People have said to me, â€Å"I can remember some with my spouse or with friends. But they only person who goes all the way back is my sister and brother. † Cicirelli agrees that reviewing the past together is a rewarding activity. â€Å"Siblings have a very important role in maintaining a connection to early life,† he says. â€Å"Discussing the past evokes the warmth of early family life. In validates and clarifies events of the early years. † Furthermore, he has found that encouraging depressed older people to reminisce with a sister or brother can improve their morale. Some of the factors that affect how much contact siblings will have, such as how near they live, are obvious. Others are more unexpected-for example. Whether there is a sister in the clan. Cicirelli found that elderly people most often feel closet to a sister and are more likely to keep in touch through her. According to Gold, sisters, by tradition, often assume a caretaking and kin- keeping role, especially after the death of their mother. â€Å"In many situations you see two brothers who don’t talk to each other that much but keep track of each other through their sisters,† she says. Researchers have found that the bond between sisters is strongest, followed by the one between sisters and brothers and, last, between brothers. Sisters and brothers who live near each other will, as a matter of course, see more of each other. But Cicirelli says that proximity is not crucial to a strong relationship later in life. â€Å"Because of multiple chronic illnesses, people in their 80s and 90s can’t get together that easily. Even so, the sibling seems to evoke positive feelings based on the images of feelings inside. † Gold’s finding support this assertion. During a two- year period, contact among her respondents decreaed slightly, but positive feelings increased. Just the idea that the sibling is alive, that ‘there is someone I can call,’ is comforting. † Although older people may find solace in the thought that their siblings are there if they need them, rarely do they call each other for help or offer each other instrumental support, such as loaning money, running errands of performing favors. â€Å"Even though you find siblings saying that they’d be glad to help each other and saying they would ask for help if necessary, rarely do they ask,† Cicirelli points out. Gold believes that there are several reasons siblings don’t turn to each other more for instrumental help. First, since they are usually about the same age, they may be equally needy or frail. Another reason is that many people consider their siblings safety nets who will save them after everything else has failed. A son or daughter will almost always be turned to first. It’s more acceptable in our society to look up or down the family ladder for help than sideways. Finally, siblings may not turn to each other for help because of latent rivalry. They may believe that if they need to call on a brother or sister they are admitting that the other person is a success and â€Å"I am a failure. † Almost all of the people in Gold’s study said they would rather continue on their own than ask their sister or brother for help. But she found that a crisis beyond control would inspire â€Å"a ‘rallying’ of some or all siblings around the brother or sister in need. † Despite the quarreling and competition many people associate with the mere mention of their sisters and brothers, most of us, Gold says, will find â€Å"unexpected strengths in this relationship in later life. †

Creative Piece Cheating Death Essays

Creative Piece Cheating Death Essays Creative Piece Cheating Death Essay Creative Piece Cheating Death Essay Essay Topic: Creative Today there was is hope, chance. Beneath the crimsoned, broken pain, insecurities continue to devour the single beating flesh beneath my chest. There it laysthe broken link which withstands the feelings that ache. Withstanding the diminished, breathless air, I fail to understand the absence of being. No longer able to see the hurt in your ardent eyes I feel the want to be with what is lost. Fading into the pasty dark, I have every reason to despise you for letting me go, letting me slip back into unconsciousness. It was thereI remember. I cannot touch it. I used to pass it every day. How could a human forget those sacred words beautifully scrawled across the white paint, in Black-Eternal ink?You are under a curse, for your whole nation has been cheating me. Malachi 3:9Ghosting past this entrance to death, witnessing this beauty asks too many questions. Why does my hand prevent itself from feeling the scratched indents of foretold stories engraved on this Wall?Fear is only in our minds even though it hungers for the naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve and shatters every hopeful thought and empties your heart andHere begins the emptiness. I cannot fear more than death. No thoughts allowed, the nature of the mind is restrained to white space. You cannot hide the pure desire for emptiness as the guilty thoughts explore your mind. Wishing to stay awake, for that second longer, I can never reach the switch to rescue life again. A part of me knows, one day, just maybe, one day, I can return to life. Perceiving the world through faded eyes implants the immoral statuses within.Trying to seek the truth beneath your eyes, the breathing flames numb my heart. To see you infected, by this senseless tumour, persisting never to let go. But one day I will be; I thrive to reach beyond all ideology, to end this idiocy; you will, once again, be able to be with me when I return.I found myself glancing to the other side. I had been there, once. Where the unknown normality grows. Loose ends tied in my w orld; I yearn to touch the golden creatures before the emptiness. My perception deceived, you could not cannot see me anymore. The uncontrollable longing to sprint, spreading the clipped wings of time. Go. Run. To where and how? To the past to retrieve the life lost. There was no way out, I had to go back. As they wired my body below I felt surges that helped return, flashing through streams of consciousness, urging, gasping to see you again.Moments controlled the existence of death, inducing life. But in between us was The Wall. What emerges behind The Wall? Clones. Originality. Unfinished, natural life. Controlled, possessive and twisted views, hidden behind the barrier, preventing my return. I cannot look past the glass.Incessantly transgressing that boundary of otherness, there is no true way I can pause my existence much longer, for there is no other reason to stay; it is healthier to live as two, combined, than stand as one, alone. My identity, stolen. The one feature that I c ould call my own was now lost. The disorientation, heightened by the entirely ambiguous ending of life itself. Until. Until what? Until the angel of death evokes the innocence beneath the heavens? Nountil the destiny of life is fulfilled with the seamless understanding of your individual prophecy and rejects any invidious comment that destroys your inner-voice.I cannot find you. The real you, the Truth. Its hiding who you are, deep down there, in that transgression of hope. Through all the lies I desperately seek for the empty teardrops. Deceiving my invidious mind, youre standing there, in front of me. I cannot reach you. So I walked away leaving no-one to hold the mask that causes my exhilaration. Why can you not bring me back? I Am Watching You, Holding My Hand. But They Are Trying To Leave Me Here, On This Side.Grasping your presence helped the restraint of the essence inside me. Walking away did not help beyond the pain, although I left without understanding the true height of tenderness that still manipulates my dreams; dreams in which the pavement shines like silver until reality streaks that true burning nightmare of this strange existence.Nothing deceives me but the lies that you give, the lies that run through the soul of my mind. You dont understand the feelings that you have captured within my every diminishing thought. I want to run further. To release my mind from the burning passion that writhes my veins but the need to stay within a small perimeter of your shadow conjoins me until it is your turn to go, to join me on this side.Honesty lays a lonely word. Rare to be heard, the honesty released the death of images drenched in hate. I cannot distinguish the power beneath the revulsion. There is every reason to crush the pumping vein that injects my corpse with poison. Silent screams repulse my lips, desiring to gasp, to breathe. But what is there reason to? Our shadows no longer stitched, our rose reducing petals. So why is there a constant though t of forgetting everything you are not? Erasing the things you could have been, erasing the tears, scarring my puppeted face. Stringed from rejection, pain and torment puppeteers my broken limbs, the white coats hold me.We were not liars then. I am not a liar now. We both watched the broken yesterday and I longed for tomorrow, together. Always on display, I close my eyes to see past the pain of dark.Today, unable to wake I lay illusive to the shreds of my heart, wounding my expression. It hurts to witness the human echoes, re-lived through the nightmares of my dreams. Bring me past the hurt, the agony of watching the unreachable. Why can you not cross over too?Startled by the dusted gasps of forced air that respond to the crippling need for suffering I believe the shadows that whisper your life and fade mine. What blinds their bright eyes, unseen to the day, with the unthoughtful death of the truth? What reflects mine the envious shade of green? Temptations to end the sickening thou ghts of preventing my life fulfil the emotions of ghostly hauntsUntrue to the world, there are no essential extensions beyond the blank colour of living. NothingnessEmpty. Thus what fact of life presents the immortal eternity of insipid day? The burning wish for the vile expressions to disappear, tortured my thoughts. The containing of these emotions pains the eyes, watching the memories drift by the expressionless seams that reduce the image to shreds. Why does this reckless behaviour pursue beyond the crazed insanities? Why is this episode taking so long, like a deplorable dawn, continuing the revulsion?I cannot seek through this mindless minefield to find the meaning of how I startled you. I have lost you. Through all the unnecessary disputes of hiding this anguish, came the hopelessness. Lost. Damaged by the insufferable healings, the dawn breaks through. Another day, another time. Now will take my life to hold on to the dead ghost you have become. Without the laughing grimaces, there cannot be a strand of a possibility that this will return to ordinariness, unless there is saviour of this democracy.I have fortunately become comfortably numb. Longing for safety, a content, distinguished life creates disturbance since adopting a treacherous, deceived living. There stood a misunderstood portrait glaring, incessantly, back at the shattered reflection illustrating the possessed front diminished by the aching breaths. What I saw, cannot be taken back. What I heard cannot be forgotten. The nauseating pearled eyes scowl at the forgotten side of me. The crystal visionary protected you from my touch. I can see you but I cannot reach you from this side. Here begins a torn moment when I stare at that beautiful, wondering place and see nothinghere begins the fragile moments that scare me the most. Arms outstretched, desperately seeking past the shallow graves to find Someone, Something, Anything. The flames of hesitation smoulder the earth to the hellish nightmare belo wlying here on the floor helps see beyond reality, patiently drowning in regret and hope. From this perspective the sky can be seen, the smoking flamed sky, ruined from the eternal loss of life. Is eternal accurate, or will this transparent life end?Promises abandoned deep from the shrieking cries, everyone leaning on nothing. Left behind the settling dust, lays the small, tight walls, surrounding the echo of quiet sound, the vividly dull poster, strung from one corner, and the light. Bleak and flickering. What thought required me to enter the tortured bricks of crimson? How did my tortured soul end up wishing to live life, if still life, like this dreary spirit?Last hopes suspended, entering the mirrored reflection paved the road to hell, whilst the images on my side were suffering, but right. Rules and regulations followed forprotection. I think. There is a different atmosphere on this side, stranded, less appealing. I want for nothing than to recede towards what once was.Calm and ready, I progress towards the Wall. Fighting to clamber beyond the glass, the need for water to tremble down my face, to feel again, pushes me towards the boundary. I will step beyond this shield, I will go back. Capturing the moment in the music of mind gives one chance. The soul escaping through the taped up hole, triggers the emotional privation and screams pierce the splintered hearts, wreathed in bandage.Me? Eyeballed by white coats told an odd story. What was happening now? Am I Alive Again? Sightless to the happening, drowsiness mumbled through the watered silence.A familiar hand grasped mine as I felt my eyes flicker back into my body.Dont let go of me. I dont want to go back without you, I was am scared.Within you I lose myself. Without you I find myself wanting to become lost again. I am not leaving now. Im just sleeping.

London and Composed upon Westminster Bridge Essay Example

London and Composed upon Westminster Bridge Essay Example London and Composed upon Westminster Bridge Paper London and Composed upon Westminster Bridge Paper Essay Topic: Poetry The two poems, London and Composed upon Westminster Bridge, show two different perspectives of the city and its inhabitants. Both poems illustrate the poets views on London which are quite diverse yet still have similarities in their respective outlooks. London portrays Blakes views about the city and the people that inhabit it as a direct comment on the oppressive, industrialised, hierarchical society in which it was written, emphasizing some of the key themes of the poem including suffering, corruption and devastation. In comparison we see the poem Composed upon Westminster Bridge in a very different light. It demonstrates the beauty of the city and its freedom describing London as a majestic sight. These poets from the Romantic period in literature believed that children were innocent and uncorrupted, vulnerable yet a source of hope, A child more than all other gifts that earth can offer to declining man, bring hope with it, and forward-looking thoughts. Both poets convey their anger and concern about the corruptive influence that the older and more powerful members of society had on the rest of the population. This concern is mirrored in their style of writing as both poets believed in making their poetry accessible to the ordinary and less educated members of society and did this successfully by using simple and un-elaborate diction. Wordsworth effectively uses the technique of personification in order to portray the false fai ade the city presents in the absence of people. This is evident when Wordsworth writes, The City now doth like a garment, wear the beauty of the morning; silent, bare. This delivers the idea that the morning symbolizes a false representation of London as well as his use of a simile that delineates it as a cloak, hiding the true meaning. This suggests that the beauty and calm are illusory and conceal the pain and suffering beneath. I feel that the word bare is significant as it symbolises the lack of people, whilst creating a calm, idealistic place free from all the bounds society, a world much sought after by the romantics. It is a powerful image at odds with the mo dern world. It is interesting that the idea of bareness, in the poets mind, relates to hope and opportunity. In the overcrowded modern day London, the notion of opportunity relates more to the busy and efficient nature of the place than the emptiness. This is associated heavily to a point expressed in the poem, which is the absence of people from the city whilst the nature around flourishes. Wordsworth implies that the splendour of the city is a direct result of the exemption of people and the society they live in. We see this when he writes, All bright and glittering in the smokeless air. This gives the reader the impression of a tranquil, stunning and striking view of London, yet I feel Wordsworth is savouring this moment, with full knowledge that a sight so touching in its majesty will not last. Wordsworth is voicing an attack on the prevailing industry of the period when he writes smokeless air which implies that industry and people are destroying the nature, which is personified throughout the poem in this absence of people. The hyperbole Neer saw I, never felt, a calm so deep! suggests a more ominous, cynical tone where the city in all its beauty is asleep and its mighty heart lying still has yet to stir. Figuratively, when the sleeping beauty awakens it becomes a powerful wave tearing apart this nature and freedom. This is demonstrated by the image of the free-flowing river that exists in the city. There are some key contrasts and similarities developed in the poem London that is centred on the theme of suffering. Without delay we are struck with the use of I, therefore reading the poem through the eyes of the writer creating a more personal and intimate perception of London. As well as this Blake uses the traditional form of alternate rhyming lines to replicate the repetitive predictability of the circle of suffering. Another key contrast between the poems is the volume of people around the city. Blake uses the technique of repetition to reiterate and emphasize that this suffering is everywhere. We see this when he writes, In every cry of every man In every voice, in every ban. This gives us the impression that the poem is one of protest and the word ban in particular suggests an anti law attitude from Blake and a view that peoples freedom is compromised. Freedom is a key theme demonstrated in both poems however in completely different ways as Wordsworth presents the city with freedom whilst Blake portrays a city where its people and even children are enslaved. This is conveyed when he writes, The mind-forged manacles I hear. This suggests that it isnt just external restrictions that were placed upon the people of London, but they themselves allow those in power to place the restrictions by not fighting the injustice of it all and so the people are now powerless to change anything. Moreover Blake has effectively used alliteration to bring power to the sentence along with the word manacles, which gives a real feeling of restraint along with a graphic impression of unbreakable handcuffs on the hands of every man. This links with a saying by philosopher Rousseau, Man is born free, yet is everywhere in chains. This represents a key theme presented in Blakes poem, the idea of mans liberty being affected by capitalism and the state. This is made explicit when even the river, a natural phenomenon is chartered suggesting it is owned and corrupted. In comparison we see the river glideth at its own sweet will in Westminster portraying that nature has no restrictions and it is man and society that places these restrictions upon each other. Blakes poem demonstrates an attack on the church and institutions that he felt were corrupt and legitimized the suffering of children. This is shown when he has written, how the chimney sweepers cry, Every blackning church appals. This brings connotations of death along with the irony that the church is causing this suffering and death instead of bringing peace and unity to the world. The word blackning is particularly effective as it is a sinister colour and that of the soot asphyxiating the children as they sweep chimneys. It is completely dissimilar to the bright and glittering colour of Westminster and so I feel Blake is suggesting that the church is to blame for this. There is also the idea put forward in Wordsworths poem that these institutions have no conflict with nature. All the ships, towers, domes, theatres and temples lie open unto the fields which conveys a harmonious feeling between the two and that it is humans that produce and bring in this conflict. The last stanza, I feel, is connected to the blackning church and a sinister feeling is created by the use of the word midnight. The church is the main cause of prostitution, which leads people into a cycle of disease and suffering, inferred when he writes, How the youthful harlots curse, Blasts the new-born infants tear, and blights with plagues the marriage hearse. This conveys a message that from the start of their life, people are doomed to this cycle of devastation as a result of STDs. On reflection, the sonnet Composed upon Westminster Bridge has a delicate rhyming scheme that sets the appropriate tone to communicate the poets ideas. The poem is divided by the rhyming scheme presenting us with an octet and sextet. The first eight lines of the poem and their subtle ABBA rhyming scheme portray natural speech as well as suggesting harmony that is reflected in his depiction of the city. This changes and a stronger alternate rhyme is introduced inaugurating a more upbeat tempo to the poem giving it an unsettling, disconcerting feel. With this change comes the presentation of the poet and his thoughts and feelings when he writes, neer saw I which I feel strengthens his voice and opinions whilst producing a more individual account of his views. This complies with the normality of the sonnet technique, as most have a subtle change in either rhythm, pace or tone after the 8th line. In conclusion, both poems depict different views of the city, however unlike Blakes London, Wordsworths Composed Upon Westminster Bridge contains underlying ideas and beliefs that I feel play a key role in revealing Wordsworths feelings and outlook. A key idea in Wordsworths poem is that, although things such as the city appear beautiful and free, this is not necessarily the reality. This conveys a contrast of appearance vs. reality. This is different to Blakes outlook that clearly portrays the suffering and corruption found in city life. In some aspects the poems, when read together, could be interpreted in a manner that Blakes London is exposing the hidden city presented in Wordsworths poem. The two poems share many common themes including corruption, freedom and restriction, facade and truth. Both writers, in my opinion, are criticising every aspect of society and together depict a strong message that society produces confines and corruptions in people and institutions. Its interesting to consider what Wordsworth and Blake would make of the big brother, nanny state in which London now exists.

Robert Guillaume Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Robert Guillaume - Essay Example It was this very relentless fight against reality along with virtue of talent, persistence and unwillingness to bow down to anyone which bolstered his way out of the St. Louis slums to glory. Robert Guillaume was born on November 30th 1927 in St. Louis Missouri (IMDB, 2008). He was mostly in the care of his grandmother and had a strict catholic upbringing. This was where Robert first discovered his true identity. Robert discovered a talent in himself and distinguished himself by singing church music (Guillaume and Ritz, 2002). In his autobiography, Robert states, "In my mind music carried me from the St. Louis ghetto to the magnificent cathedrals of Germany, Italy and France" (Guillaume and Ritz, 2002). In 1945, Robert joined the US Army, something that was never destined to work out coherently. His rebellious and outspoken behavior caused friction with his captain and within 15 months, Robert resigned with honorable discharge (answers.com, nd). To cherish his grandmother's wishes Robert enrolled in evening classes at Saint Louis University majoring in Business Administration, but destiny had decided that performing arts was where Robert was the perfect fit. Soon after, Robert joined the prestigious music school of Washington University. Finally at the age of 31, Robert had his professional debut in the Karamu's production of Carousel (answers.com, nd). ... Ever since, Robert performed at several productions by various theatre groups. He kept jumping careers, joining new groups, visiting places and continuously improving his performances. In 1970 when he first appeared in Some place to be Somebody, he called it his first real acting debut. Robert Guillaume was one such actor who continually defied stereotypes. His commanding theatrical presence brought the actor a 1977 Tony nomination for his portrayal of Nathan Detroit in "Guys and Dolls," with an all black cast (speakingofstories.org). He had finally arrived. On his next project, Benson that had an interracial casting, Robert insisted on his character being equal to that of any other character; eventually his character turned out to be the most brilliant. Soon he left for television. This was mainly because he was informed that the movies market was not doing very well. He got a character of a butler for the nighttime satire called Soap. In 1979 he received an Emmy award for this role . Soon his roles caught the attention of top league and he was given a chance to add a 3-dimension persona to his role in Benson to reflect the progress of the Afro-American community on America. Such a position had never been attained by minorities in America in the theatre field. After his stint with television, Guillaume hit the nightclub circuits, singing in places like Las Vegas and Atlantic City. He also formed his own production company, Longridge Enterprises. This company was to develop acting projects. Perhaps his greatest theatrical achievement came in 1990, when he was chosen to play the character of Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber's spectacular musical The Phantom of the Opera. His selection was met with controversy by several audiences. Some

What types of problems do you think NTSB might encounter when dealing Essay

What types of problems do you think NTSB might encounter when dealing with an international investigation involving several ICAO members What about involving non-ICAO members - Essay Example ile conducting an investigation, policies themselves need to be as carefully examined as the actual cause of the accident, since they might be one of the reasons eventually leading to the accident. This might not be achieved if a number of members of an NTSB investigation are from the ICAO, as they would try to influence the results, thereby making the investigation faulty. 2) Another important issue is that an NTSB investigation, when conducted independently might lead to certain conclusions that require legislation to be changed. It might require a change in procedures followed by the airline operators that can sometimes increase their costs considerably. However, if the policies of the ICAO are against such an increase in costs, these changes might be discarded, thereby affecting the entire investigation. Therefore, although the NTSB would benefit from the technical expertise of the members of the ICAO, due to reasons that might affect the outcome of the investigation, it would be appropriate to include non – ICAO
